Respecting the Roots

Some cultivars deliver unforgettable first highs. Some go even further to define a cultural moment, place, and time. Just like a song can bring you back to a different time in your life, so can these classics.

How can we honor these strains that defined eras, culture, and communities? Not by borrowing names or chasing nostalgia. But by preserving, restoring, and respecting these foundational cultivars and bringing them back to life through careful sourcing, firsthand experience, and lots of patience.

MFNY Classics aren’t throwbacks, they’re living proof of what we can do by fusing old-school strains with modern processes.

Learn more about our approach to bringing these classics back to life from our Head of Operations, Cultivation, and Processing, Ian Dyche.

Drop 02

Chemdog

Before Sour Diesel, there was Chemdog.

Chemdog is the “Godfather” strain and genetic ancestor of Sour Diesel, OG Kush, GMO, and more. It’s the second of the MFNY Classics that pay homage to the strains that shaped modern cannabis — and the highs they first brought us.

The origins of Chemdog trace back to, no surprise, a Grateful Dead show where Greg Krzanowski bought a bag of bud. As the story goes, he got more in the mail from the same folks and from those bagseeds came Chem '91: the first cultivar with a name people sought out, a flavor they recognized on contact, and a reputation that traveled far and wide.

This is potent stuff, so the nose hits immediately: clean caramel gas up front, opening into a deep, raunchy funk.
The flower is dense and chunky, with bumpy, tightly-clustered nugs cloaked in silver trichomes over rich emerald green. The high is euphoric and cerebral at first, then heavy and fully physical.

A strain best used with intention. Because the (good) impression lasts.

Drop 01

Sour Diesel

The cultivar, the myth, the legend.

Sour Diesel has origins here in New York, with ancestral roots tracing back to Chemdog ’91 and Mass Super Skunk, with possible influence from Northern Lights. Because it emerged from an underground scene, accounts of its provenance vary and are widely debated — but interviews, forums, and preservation circles consistently point to a gentleman named Weasel as its originator.
After accidentally cross-pollinating Chemdog and Mass Super Skunk, he and a crew of legacy operators in the Albany area went on to distribute Sour Diesel widely, cementing its place in cannabis history.

At MFNY, we honor both its history and its unmistakable character.

On the first inhale, MFNY’s Sour Diesel hits the palate with deep diesel fuel and skunk before opening into a sour cream exhale. Its intoxicating nose famously fills a room even in the smallest amounts.
The flower looks just as iconic: round, spongy nugs bristle with short foxtails that create a spiked exterior, accented by bright orange hairs and a heavy blanket of trichomes over an emerald-green base.

The result is a highly potent, head-driven sativa that transports those who remember it through a time machine back to the ‘90s.
